Budget Level High Performance

This budget level sub delivers the same articulate and tuneful bass that our subs are known for.  Thanks to its ported design, this sub provides enough bass output for modern movies and music.

The combination of servo and a ported enclosure is what makes this sub deliver on both quality and quantity in bass.

LV12M SUBWOOFER DESCRIPTION

Looking for an affordable home theater sub that is also tight and musical? The LV12F uses a front vented alignment to gain low frequency impact and output that home theater demands. While many of our competitors limit their best technology to their top level models, we wanted to make Direct Servo affordable so we've held nothing back. As a result, you get the tight and musical bass you wouldn't normally expect from a vented subwoofer.

LV12M SUBWOOFER FEATURES

Features & Options

Product features include:

  • Patented Direct Servo technology
  • Hypex Ucd module-based amplifier with toroidal power transformer and two large 6800uF/80V capacitors
  • 12" light weight paper high excursion driver
  • Solid and very inert enclosure
  • Bass extension controls allowing adjustment of bass extension and excursion control

Direct Servo technology

All our subwoofers feature our Direct Servo technology, which is our secret to achieving tight and accurate bass. The benefits are far more than simply achieving low distortion.

Hypex Ucd module-based amplifier

Hypex Ucd modules are known among audiophiles to be one of the best sound class-D modules. While class-D can reduce the footprint of amplifiers, other companies have further incorporated switching power supplier to save cost and space. However, the disadvantages of switching power supplier are complexity of circuit leads to higher failure rate, higher compression at high transient current demand, and inflexibility of 120/240V switchable operation.

12" light weight paper high excursion driver

Driver features include:

  • Light weight paper cone
  • Low moving mass to ensure an exceptional transient response
  • High flux density in the gap to ensure low distortion
  • Flux modulation shorting rings to lower inductance and improve linearity
  • Extended upper bandwidth response allowing a higher crossover point than most

Quality enclosure

Our enclosures are very solid and well braced to minimize any cabinet resonances or coloration. Customer can choose either black oak or black matte finish.

Bass extension controls

The bass extension control enables the user to customize the frequency response of the low end for the best trade-off between output and extension. If set to low music, bass has the lowest phase shift among ported subs. However, the disadvantage is slower attenuation of subsonic signals. For HT application, we recommend low-HT mode which incorporates an additional 2rd order highpass filter to filter out subsonic signals below 20hz. High extension setting is recommended for higher HT playback level with lower thermal stress and smoother port output.

Crossover options

To suit different setups, we provide a 12 db and 24 db/octave crossover. If you are still using stereo receiver or conventional pre/power amp setup, then we recommend the 24 db switch setting. To understand more about how to correctly integrate your subwoofer, read our phase alignment article.

LV12M SUBWOOFER SPECIFICATIONS

Vented subwoofers do have more phase delay at the low end frequency spectrum. That combined with poor room acoustics sometimes produces boomy bass sound. We have variable extension frequency and damping settings to address that. Customers should experiment with extension filter settings. Low extension setting is recommended for HT use whereas high extension setting (24hz, Q=0.8) is recommend for music.

LV12M SUBWOOFER MEASUREMENTS

A quick glance at our frequency response plot will reveal that our LV12M subwoofers has a flat frequency response down to 19hz with bass extension controls set to low. This subwoofer is designed to use with the bass management in an AV receiver with LFE input. When LFE input is used, the phase and cross-over knobs have no function.

Alternatively, one can also use line inputs with both phase and crossover knobs in function. The frequency response is as follows.

Integration

LV12M with PEQ has 3 extension settings: Low-music, Low-HT, and high. Low-music has the flattest extension. For Low-HT, there is a 12db/oct rumble filter engaged to prevent the woofer from over-excursion. High extension roll-off at about 25hz and it is more energy efficient than the other two settings. All 3 are plotted below for a comparison (with line in mode). The differences are similar in LFE mode.

Another aspect of getting a correct integration is phase alignment. We have written a guide on how to achieve a phase aligned subwoofer. More >

LV12M SUBWOOFER SUMMARY

These are some of the finest subwoofers ever manufactured and the difference in sound quality between these subwoofers and the typical big-box ported subwoofer is surprising. You will hear the difference the very first time you listen and as so many have said, you will never go back to a non-servo subwoofer.
